The big news. A few days ago, Joe got a call that rocked our little world. He was offered the Executive Chef position at one of the top restaurants in the city, one of the top voted steakhouses in the country. This is huge for him, his career and our family. He's worked his butt off for the past 10 years in this industry. Our family has made many sacrifices for his career and long hours. Chef hours are no joke. To be successful you have to put in your time. It's pretty intense in the early days. Luckily we were a young couple with no kids when he started out. If you're able to handle the heat, and if it pans out that you actually have the talent, and drive, it ends up being well worth it in the long run.
We are very excited and thankful for this opportunity. I know that he will do amazing and that the restaurant will be happy with their choice in him. There are so many pros with this not only for him but for our family, one of them being distance. The new restaurant is only a few miles from our house. His current job is downtown, a 45 minute commute, one way. Also, they are closed Sundays! We never get weekends as a family. How awesome is that?! Additionally, they are only open for dinner service. His current employer has both lunch and dinner services as well as Sunday brunch. Obviously he has a lot of responsibility on his plate and will need to be there in the afternoon but at least there won't be any more early mornings or fourteen hour shifts!
He's so excited about this new venture and has already been brainstorming dishes and ideas. The restaurant isn't as high volume as his current place so it will give him more time to really focus on the details. He's great at what he does so I'm excited to see it all come in to action. Their food is already so amazing. It's actually one of my favorite places to eat.
I know he will miss his current employer and especially his mentors. They will always be "family". We'll go in to eat and visit every so often. It really is a great place. They have treated him well over the past five years.
Today a story about his hire was published by Culture Map. The attention from that has been huge. I'm pretty sure there are more stories about to roll out. It's pretty crazy. I'm so happy that his hard work has paid off. He deserves this and while I don't say it as nearly much as I should, I'm super proud to be his partner in this life and for my kids to have a daddy they can really look up to.
