For those not familiar with pregnancy milestones, 24 weeks is "Viability Day". This is a cutoff for when many hospitals will at least attempt to keep a baby alive should her or she come early. No one wants their baby to come at 24 weeks, but it is a little reassuring knowing that if she did, she'd be allowed a fighting chance now. Come on time, keep a tickin'. There are many possible health concerns immediately and later on in life for preemies. Every day in utero is a great day for properv development and preventing these sometimes long term complications. Here are some numbers on survival week by week...
COMPLETED WEEKS OF GESTATION AT BIRTH
37 weeks is considered full term
I cannot believe it's been almost four weeks since we got the news that flipped my world upside down. I had surgery and started my bed rest. I am very happy with the way things have gone so far. At that time 24 weeks seemed like worlds away.
Next goal, 28 weeks!
24 Week Survey..
How big is baby?: over a week ago she was 1.4 lbs so I am guessing more than 1.4 lbs by now. Last week she was in the 41st percentile, which is great.
Weight gain?: lost 2lbs in the first few weeks and am up 5 from that. So I am up 3 from my starting weight.
Stretch marks?: not yet...
Maternity clothes?: I lay in bed wearing sweats all day every day. I really am not showing as much as most 5 1/2 month pregnant women.
Sleep?: sleeping well, lots of pillows help.
Best moment this week?: Hitting the big 2-4 today. Plus Joe is off work and is going to clean the bathroom. Exciting! Ha
Food cravings?: Sugar! I try to be good but all the Valentines candy did not help.
Movement?: Lots! but it has calmed a little, I think she sleeps more now. Kicks are bigger though. You can really "see" them. I can feel her at the same time on one side and the other too.
Belly button?: still an innie but not as deep. I ordered my flexible belly ring because the Peri got onto me about still having mine in. She says that if it were to get infected it could spread to the baby. Her exact words "You can get MRSA from your Cousin at your Gradmas house" okaaay... lol.
What I miss?: doing my hair and makeup, shopping. Looking put together.
Labor signs?: I get lots of Braxton Hicks but this can be normal.
What I'm looking forward to?: Hitting 26 and then 28 weeks!
Your Baby in Week 24 of PregnancyYour baby is about eight and a half inches long and weighs one and a half pounds, gaining steadily at a rate of six ounces per week. Much of that weight comes from accumulating baby fat, as well as from growing organs, bones, and muscle. Those little ears of hers are getting sharper and can hear very loud sounds, from a yapping dog to a jackhammer. Also by now, that fabulous face is almost fully formed, complete with eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair. Is your baby a brunette, a blonde, or a redhead?
